About this trip
We walk through the oldest continuously inhabited medina in the world: Bab Boujloud, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, then the terraces of the Chouara tanneries to watch traditional leather dyeing. We visit copper and zellige workshops before a Moroccan lunch in a riad.
Day-by-day itinerary
Bab Boujloud – Bou Inania – Al-Qarawiyyin – Chouara Tanneries
Enter Fes el-Bali through the iconic blue-green Bab Boujloud gate and visit the 14th-century Bou Inania Madrasa with its intricate cedar carving and zellige tilework. Walk to the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and university — the oldest continuously operating university in the world — and the neighbouring Al-Attarine Madrasa. Continue through the copper and brass souk to the famous Chouara tanneries, where you climb to a leather-shop terrace for a panoramic view of the dye pits. Visit a zellige workshop and a ceramic atelier, then sit down to a traditional Moroccan lunch in a restored riad. End with a stroll through the souks before returning to your accommodation.
