About this trip
The Agafay Desert Day Trip is a short, atmospheric escape to the rocky stone desert of Agafay, located only 30 km from Marrakech. Unlike the Sahara's sand dunes, Agafay is a vast arid plateau of pale stones and golden hills backed by the snow-capped High Atlas — a surreal, moon-like landscape. You ride a camel across the plains, visit a traditional Berber village, share mint tea and a home-cooked lunch in a desert camp, and (on the afternoon option) watch the sun set behind the Atlas mountains before returning to Marrakech. With almost no walking and a location close to the city, this is the easiest way to experience the Moroccan desert without a long journey.
Day-by-day itinerary
Marrakech – Agafay Desert – Marrakech
Afternoon pick-up from your Marrakech accommodation and a short drive (about 45 minutes) to the Agafay stone desert. Meet your camel and enjoy a one-hour ride across the pale, rocky plains with the Atlas mountains on the horizon. Continue to a Berber village for mint tea with a local family, then head to a desert camp for a traditional Berber lunch under a tent. Relax in the camp, watch the sun set behind the Atlas, and drive back to Marrakech in the early evening, arriving around 20:00.
